Tarantino films are well known for their over-the-top violence and profane language. They're NOT well known for their subtle and nuanced critiques of systems of oppression, which, surprisingly, is exactly what we get in Django Unchained. In this Wisecrack Edition, we break down how everything from language to 200 year old operas, to the role of acting in giving slaves agency, inform how this film masterfully subverts the logic of slavery in the antebellum South.

I would believe Stephen might be a manipulative slave and did it only to gain privilege in the context of slavery, if he didn't cry for Candy. He loved that boy, you can't tell me that Stephen didn't act like a father figure for Candy when it counts.

The Bible condones, and even promotes, slavery in multiple ways. Throughout the Bible, there are sick guidelines on how to treat/abuse your slaves, and Jesus tells slaves to respect their masters, even if they are brutal, and unjust.

Logos means more than speech and reasoning. It goes further back to the Egyptians who perceived it more fully as the weaving, which would be the bringing of knowledge into this realm . Disconnecting the sacred from the mouth sounds, we are left with a shallow understanding of logos.

I can relate to the part about language. I'm an Eastern European who works and lives in Germany, and i've been treated like an idiot countless times for not speaking german or not knowing everything about the system here. To my defence, i know it's a bad idea to move to a country when you don't speak the language, but i thought that in this day and age and since Germany is such a developed country most people could speak at least some English. WRONG, even the ones who can speak English refuse to. I wanted to buy train tickets from one of those ticket machines once and it took a while because i had never done that before. The asshole waiting behind me shouted to his friend that "It's gonna take a while... shitty foreigners!".

The .... "Logic of Slavery"... read much about generational curses? Can you do the numbers and research how many slave revolts there was??? The Civil War had an added pressure at its back that they never talk about... but old Southerners do: "If the North hadn't freed us... we were about to free ourselves." Think: "Haiti." Fast forward to ... today. Jordan Person talks about how religion is used to create the "spirit" of a culture. Civilization instead of the brutality of chaos. The individual has to sacrifice some of his/her humanity and individuality for cooperating with others. When someone gives up too much, anger and resentment occurs. Add how video games and social media leeches compassion and empathy from people. School shootings, mass drug addiction ... Alcohol related deaths are three times worse than drug overdoses. The largest and fastest rising rates in suicide is occurring in middle age white males. The group with the greatest rates of alcoholism is middle age white females. "Culture is a trap" said both Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung... yet you're still basking in adolescent stage White supremacy. There's not enough beds for the rising rates of Mental Illness. What's your diagnosis??

Had to come back and point out that the creator of this video implants a false idea in how slaves were viewed in the ancient world (specifically in Greece). In reality and historically slaves who were educated before they were captured or made into slaves demonstrated easily that slaves were not stupid animal-like people as the creator of the video suggests slaves were viewed as, and many slaves were quite intelligence because, such as in Rome, they had to fulfill functions like we attribute to ancient scribes and other functionaries for their household master. Plus in places like ancient Athens slaves could become wealthy and even buy their freedom off, but that still didn't make them citizens per se, and the Antebellum South was not so much base don ancient Rome as it was ancient Greece, specifically places like Athens which was a city with like 32k citizens and like 400k slaves or something like that. Not to mention Sparta and how that society was, or how the even older Mycenae culture was. So you can see the creator is clearly twisting things and essentially this video is itself a type of propaganda commentary about movies that themselves function as a type of propaganda. Clever and Woke. Where their stupid slaves, and I mean truly stupid ones, in real life? Yes, but were there also highly intelligent ones or should I say educated ones? Yes, but the idea is that the common person felt that slaves were commonly sub-human and that was simply not true based on how one became a slave in the ancient world (war captive, debt slavery, criminal of the state, tribe or city conquered). Keep in mind that men mostly were killed and woman were valued enough to not kill them and treated as a sort of wife you could buy though we could call that a slave. Think of it as a type of indentured servant you got for domestic work. Yet, male slaves existed. Who created slaves? Everyone from people like Alexander the Great, who if you notice the movie 300 demonizes people like Xerxes, which is a Spartan Myth and Greek prejudice yet when it comes to Alexander who is the guy (and the Macedonians who were technically partners with Persia, and eventually so was Sparta) who actually conquer and end the liberty of the Greek city-states, destroy Thebes razing it and selling its people off into slavery. Plus, later Rome actually conquers these various Hellenistic kingdoms and Greek city states yet no movie like 300 demonizing Rome. We live in a world where some history is over used an other parts, ignored. Ever seen the movie Troy. Those "Greeks" were actually the layer of Greek society called the Mycenae "Greeks" and they themselves get the same conquered result. ie someone comes and destroys there city, but did they ever make a Troy Part 2 movie: the Can of Whoop Ass upon the Greeks? Nope because like so many ignored parts of history that are not secret or truly hidden they simply are not emphasized. OR, they make a movie glorifying what amounted to those who were acting in a manner normally demonized such as the role of a slaver or conqueror which is by Marxist doctrine viewed as 'bad' so those who did that then are 'bad'. Yet, as we see with 300 the Roman world held a Greek Prejudice which we could call 'racist' so Rome adopts this prejudice and then it iterates through many cultures and contexts. Alexander sought to combine into one 'race' Macedonians, Greeks and Persians. And in the Hellenistic world 'race' mattered, but then this was not unique though as the Mongols or even the Han in China (plus many other places) had a similar type of social structure. You find this concept of tribal superiority where one tribe dominates others throughout the middle east and really much of the ancient world. So how slavery then is presented here, and the modern myth of slavery in how people thought of slaves, especially in the ancient world is simply not how it was. But since Mr. Wokeness presents himself with a sort of Woke intellectualism I thought why not I'll bust that bubble of certitude present in his video. You are quite welcome creator of this video. Have a great day.

In reality this movie is a type of propaganda. All the things mentioned in this video are purposeful are there to demonstrate, for example, that Southerners are not well educated, a sterotype (including the elite) and as such it is based on sterotypes, so the movie is Woke, but the opposite to those who know actual history with depth and nuance. It is an enjoyable movie, but clearly a wish fulfillment meant as a sort of revenge fantasy. Someone could make a movie essentially its opposite, OR they could make a more accurate and naunced film, but then QT would not direct or write it. I don't think he is capable of it really. He seems smart, but clearly he has an ideological bias that I think would blind him, plus he is writing for an ideologically predisposed audience and being funded by those with an ideological agenda to make not historically accurate movies but propaganda Woke movies. QT if you read this yes that is a personal insult to you sir.

Why do White people think they’re victims? White Supremacy just got softer, after slavery many Blacks were still not equal to whites, like how only Thomas Edison gets credit for the lightbulb when Lewis Latimer had done great things, and then the Jim Crow laws. Then the election of a Black president along with the murders of black youth by police getting covered up and misjudged 🤦🏾‍♂️

My only critique is on the “western” portion in which he claims it subverts westerns. I wouldn’t say the people Django killed were anything close to cowboy types. I would also say that black slaves weren’t really “ignored” in westerns. Slaves weren’t common in the old west, especially since most western states and territories outlawed slavery, and most black people fleeing slavery went north, not west.

What I pondered on my second watch-through is Django's relationship to Shultz. Shultz is the very ideal of european culture, and he seems to act like a father figure to Django. Again and again Shultz gives other blacks tips, advice and direction but without interfering with their choices. He doesn't give, but instead indulges them into his way of thinking. Looking at the current tensions in our culture, I can kinda see the correlation between people of colour demanding reparation and help to mend the past, whilst the white communities just don't understand it. The conclusion I'm drawing is that Django made the decision to ignore the past and take the lessons from what was once his masters, and make his own way. As a man, as a husband and as a black person. I'm not black so I can't really say if that's a goal for a person of colour, or if the feeling of not being seen, heard and guided is what drives the pain. But what I do feel is that Shultz and Django's relationship seems to be very much like how the rule of one in Star Wars works. Introduce a apprentice to a new line of thinking, make them embrace their nature, and then expect them to succeed their master, thus becoming the master. On a side note, I do not believe that Sith's are bad, but rather representations of how chaotic self determination and growing up can be. And on a final note I find Django a powerful reminder of how important it is to not censor, remove or alter history. The movie does a fantastic job at showing how no one is without fault, and that greed, ego and the ability to do harm exists in all of us. How many black and white people had to die for Django's quest to save Hildi? If he did not have Hildi, what would he have done instead? Part of racist ideology is the idea that black people do not have the brains to solve their own issues. "They can never be a part of society. They need to be led, helped and guided". I interviewed a Nazi a few years ago, and I asked him "you don't seem to hate black people. Why is that?" He laughed and said "you're right, I don't. It's a matter of helping them be happy where they belong. You see, they can never be happy up here. Here they will suffer with never being good enough. Back where they came from they can be with their own kind."  This movie makes a point that anyone is as capable as they think they are, something I deeply admire with this movie.

Key point about Wagner and the Niebelung cycle: Wagner's opera cycle was produced a decade after this film is set. HOWEVER, the story it adapts existed long before and the primary source, the medieval poem the Niebelungenlied, probably would have been familiar to a well-read man like Dr. Schultz.

I never really dug Django Unchained, to me it was just a piece of fuel for racially motivated revenge fantasies, and a possible favorite among the murder gangs of South Africa, that they can watch to feel good about themselves in between attacking and butchering white farmers and their families. To some extend Schultz is morally not far from the slavers, killing people reformed or not for the sake of money and only justified to do so by the law, much like the slavers are only justified by the law to do their horrible deeds. Quintin Tarantino was trying to make a modern black spoliation flick, and experimenting with 70's sploitation and grind house has been a trademark of his, but the black sploitation films of this era such as Mandingo had the message and story: This is slavery, here are some horrible stories of slavery showed in a reporting manner so we can all see for us selves and conclude that it was bad. Where as in Django Unchained, slavery is just an underline and Django is truly about empowerment, it does not leave anything to the audience and all its antagonists are pretty hollow dastardly dehumanized villains just waiting to be mowed down, because they are sub humans and the ultimate bad guys, kind of like how the enemy would be portrayed in the propaganda film of some fighting nation or totalitarian regime. Thus I see it as a Black power fantasy rather than a film true to the sympathy generating traits of the sploitation era. Maybe drawing some parallels to old Shakespearean era revenge tales like Titus Andronicus, where the hero needs to go through a bunch of ordeals to enact revenge.

It's almost impossible not to picture Broomhilda as the subject of the song (which is, I think one of the absolute best rock songs ever written). She's the Brown Sugar of CANDYland. "House Boy" is of course Samuel Jackson's Stephen. And then there's the "scarred old slaver," etc. You can have a lot of fun adapting the song to the characters in your imagination while the song's playing .
