Does Water Float? Can you Float Liquid Water on Liquid Water?

The Action Lab
The Action Lab

A lot of people are confused as to why I said the ice cube would weigh more melted than solid in the oil. Let’s be clear, I mean if you have a scale in the oil measuring the weight of the ice it will weigh more as liquid than solid even though the mass is the same. This is because the liquid water has less volume for the buoyant force of the oil to push it up. This is an important point.

I guess it's with the fact that any scale measures only the normal force exerted by the object on the scale

*MAJOR CORRECTION - THE ACTION LAB* I think that you got your facts about the sea level rising is slightly wrong. The main reason that the sea level will rise is because of the fact that the ice (which is mostly sitting on land), slides and melts into the oceans. About 60% (by surface area) of the ice is not in the oceans, but on top of Antarctica and Greenland; however the ice sitting on top of Greenland is extremely thick (up to about 1-2 kilometers thick) and the ice on Antarctica even thicker (up to about 2-3 or more kilometers thick); where as the ice over the Arctic Sea is just about 1-2 meters thick. Most of the ice is *NOT* floating in the oceans. Therefore sanity of the water is a feeble contributing factor.

oil is a hydrophobic component and you put ice in it means as the solution is non-polar they will have a hydrogen bond formation due to the nonpolar molecule that surrounds it

So could we solve the oceans rising problem by adding salt into the ocean? Theoretically.

Vor Monat
Daniel Herman Shmulyan

You forgot to mention that earth holds a lot of ice which is not floating but rests on a solid land. When this ice melts it will add new water to the ocean and will definitely rise the sea level. This effect is much stronger than the salt effect you demonstrated

Ice caps are over land. It’s those that will raise the sea level!! Not the ice floating in the sea. That’s quite literally a drop in the ocean. Ice caps melting on the other hand, well, it’ll get interesting to say the least. Anyway, this video really made my gears grind.

I thinkt there are at least 3 reasons as to why sea level increases due to global warming. 1) is what you said. 2) is thermal expansion of water. 3) is that at least part of the ice in Antarctida seats on top of land, not directly in the ocean (there is land under the ice in Antarctida, although not everywhere).

The liquid water will stay at the same level. Because if you look at it when you put ice in a cup of water the level of water rises so it's as if the ice has already melted. So it'll take as much space when it melts as it does when it's frozen.

I think the water level will drop because the crystals of H2O in the frozen water (ice) will break as it becomes warmer rand the molecules will come closer together creating a substance (water) that is more dense and has a lesser volume than the frozen water. Please give me the subscription box. 😃
