GameStop's Pre-Order Policy Change Is A Sign Of A Much Bigger Problem

GameStop is changing its pre-order refund policy. You'll no longer be able to refund your money after 30 days of it's release date. Why would GameStop change this now? Let's discuss.

I thought there was some controversy, due to sales pressures, that managers of stores would simply move pre order money around to put pre orders on the next round of games which were targeted by the company? Also, I thought there was a bunch of money tied up in stores of pre order money, like really old pre orders people must have forgotten about, something like 20 percent of pre orders aren't picked up and the money people put down got pocketed by shifty managers.

Wow I can’t believe you mothafuckers are happy and rejoicing about GameStop suffering. You fools have no idea how a business works and runs. I have never had a problem with GameStop and will always give them my business whenever I can. Rich u using the example of how you forget to pick up games u preordered and should be able to get your money back after a month is ridiculous. U forgetting to pick up the game after a month is absolutely your fault and should not be able to get your money back at all because that preorder could have been sold to someone else. don’t waste a business’s time with hour dumbass bullshit

I would only preorder a game if I wanted to secure a copy the very day it came out. It's not hard to find a copy of any game a month after release. If life has gotten in the way of you making a single trip to the store for an entire month, maybe you don't have enough time to be playing games in the first place, let alone worrying about some retailer's return policy.

$10 for game? Man you got lucky, I recently was looking to sell a bunch of old games and checked there website to see what I could get and with over 30 games I would of only gotten $8 and some change. 30 plus games for $8! I checked what they were selling those same used games for and most of them were priced for over $20. It’s completely insane!

It's not that of a big of a sign. On a financial aspect its been common place for allot of companies frequent flyer, gift cards and more as of late. Lots of Hotel/Airline programs in the past couple of year have made it your points are lost after so long, or gift cards lose value after so long. Why, it's money they can't show on books and they have sit on the money and hold on to for years and years. There are likely preorders over 5/10 years old and it's money they can not do anything with except be responsible for it and likely no intention of picking up in the first place. (Allot of people put 5$ down on a game to get free stuff or beta, ect and never plan to pick it up) Sure it maybe a sign, but it's common place as of late.

How do you save GameStop? How about this: 1) stop carrying standard edition video games. You cannot compete with Walmart, Best Buy, ect in terms of Madden, COD, ect. Sorry, themz is factz. 2) Sign exclusive deals with publishers to have collectors edition ONLY available at GameStop. Become a collectors edition company. Make it where if the gamer wants the cool extras in a game they HAVE to come to you, period. Not just, "hey we have the GameStop edition of the game" nonsense. Make it, "you can go somewhere else and get the standard edition, or come to us and get the collectors edition. Those are your only 2 choices". 3) strike a deal with PSN/ XBOX marketplace to have a digital presence. I'm not smart enough to detail how it would work, but make it work. Do those 3 things and you will be solvent again.

Wow this is actually disgusting. Working at gamestop I saw 'old' pre-orders as a way for people to get money back, pay off other things, and help get them preorders if they didn't have the money right then. It came in handy for some customers when we had quite a few preorders on games with super limited quantities. But this screws the pooch so much more. It literally takes away the appeal of the pre-orders. The fluidity was a big thing for me that made me TRUST even discussing pre-orders a bit more. I hated pushing their agenda to begin with. Even with the elite pro being taken away, I saw that as a horrible business decision. What's next, automatic renewal of points to the pro program? Removing points more frequently than they already do? I tell people to just go to mom and pop shops anymore. The best part was with preorders, we had games that were AGES old in systems, and as long as you pre-ordered it at that SAME store, we could give you your money back. I had people with $5 down on BO2 to move them to spiderman or BO3. Honesty was always key with me about things. My 'numbers' were never the best but being honest with customers was more important to me. Shady moves like this are why I'm happy I got out of there.

Games go all digital. I quit. I'm not on board with digital at all. Got better things I can buy with my money than a game system that I won't have the ability to purchase a game for it after it's life cycle. If I want digital I'll go to Steam on my PC. R.I.P. console gaming if digital replaces all physical. People will learn digital is a tech apocalypse. Gamestop may have bad policies that hurt gamers but all this digital movies, games and even books for Christ sake is bullshit.

I know some people are shopping from Amazon but unlike Gamestop on Amazon there is no concept of earning points and redemm those points to get 5 or 15 dollar certificate or even trading for cash. That reminds me when I Was at EB Games a few years ago, I bought a used copy of Kirby's Return to Dreamland. Game didn't work in the two NIntendo Wii Us and the Nintendo Wii our household had, so I bought it back well within the 30 days, and they wouldn't give me my money back it was either store credit towards another game or a pre-order I had. Even though at the time the guy who rang me through before said that I could get a FULL refund if they was any problems with the game. So I was pissed, and really I needed to get to my own work, so I told them just put it on my Pokemon Moon Pre-order I had. I know I should of tried harder to get my money back, but I worked as customer service at a different store so I knew how things work in the retail setting and I didn't wanted to end up making a scene. I never bought anything used from there ever again, and I advise people doing the same.

Sorry.. don't see what's wrong with this change. Let's just say its buyer's responsibility. Gamestop held their end of the bargain by taking in extra stock for the preorders and the customer should pick it up, like any other responsible adult. Gamestop isn't a charity. Just putting this out here, I don't work for them and I don't live in the US. My local game stores does not have policies like what you mentioned. As long as we preorder something, we are expected to collect it. No such thing for a full refund. Heck even when we preordered something, there is a fine print right over there stating that deposits are non-refundable. Just preorder something that you really want. Don't do it just for the sake of doing it and then "accidentally" forget about it. I'm pretty sure it's not an accident but just priorities. If you could make a few mins or even an hour out of your 24hrs to head down and place a preorder, I'm sure you could do the same by picking it up. That said, we all know Gamestop is bad but making this an excuse to hit them down even more is just.. I don't know, unjustified? Don't see how this policy change is a negative thing.

Just my thoughts, no one gets excited to be bought by a firm 99% of the time these buyouts lead to layoffs. Don't think the pre order policy is a big change most stores don't return cash kn pre orders. I didn't even know they gave you cash back for pre orders. GS has an uphill climb. They will probably need to close stores and focus on creating "experience"

There is no excuese for forgetting a pre-order other then you changed phone numbers. I know for a fact that I got a call when I pre-ordered FallOut 76. Now I dislike some of the stuff gamestop does as much as the next person, from their insane used prices being a few dollars less then new to the way some of their management treats people but this is on you as the consumer. They called you and you made a choice to not to pick it up your SOL now. Also I cant stand digital media for games. Call me old school but I would much rather have a physical copy be it disk or cart like the switch. But what would happen if Nintendo went belly up and the eshop went away now if my switch breaks i cant get back the digital copies of the games i bought i can always find a used switch to buy and if i have physical i can play then again. Look at the resurgence of the retro stuff, i mean i am 38 so i remember very clearly the NES, SNES, Gennisis, TG16 etc. if they were digital media focused then some of that stuff would be "lost" because a lot of those companies are now not around anymore.

GameStop has two issues that are outside of their control; the media that is used and the content of newer games. The reason media is an issues, for better or worse many people are moving away from physical media. Though GameStop does sell digital copies of games, in most cases, if one were to buy a digital copy of a game it would be via the platform(ie Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft) and not a retail store. As for the content, there is not a lot of new/original (good) idea in the gaming industry. Add in many companies are trying to get as much money out of people as they can with season passes, and micro transactions. Many long time gamers have either retired or are not collecting for the newer systems. As for how GameStop can survive, long term I don't think it is possible, unless something changes in the industry(which seems unlikely). Though short term(ie maybe another decade or so), I would say change their business model, & become a retro game store; especially if they focus on quality and service instead of what they currently do which is try to gain additional revenue from current sales(like preorders or pushing their rewards program/magazine,).

Here is what I think needs to change with the gaming industry.. 1.make online gaming free again 2.stop making gamers pay more just to get the full experience of a game the game itself is 60$ so why do players have to keep putting more money into a 60$ game I'm not saying they have to but to get the full version and the best experience out of a single game you have to pay...

You either adapt or you go out of business. They need to have a digital distribution platform if they want to stay in business and I don't think that is going to happen. I used to work here. Yeah GameStop is dying, but there’s nothing wrong with this policy. It should have been that way in the beginning. The preordering system wasn’t even malicious in the first place. It was to help those get copies of games that had to have it on release day. Simple as that. We even had to send out courtesy reminders to remind folks to come get their crap. It’s not GameStops job to keep track of a million people’s money who had no absolute intention on buying the game release day. Nobody goes into any other business and just purposely leaves money on the counter hoping it’ll still be there 30 days later so they buy something they should have bought 30 days earlier. If I’m not mistaken, I think you can put your money in a bank and let it sit there as long as you like.
