Billionaires are whining about paying taxes but they usually ended up paying very little to nothingness or any due to loop holes, government concessions, agriculture subsidies, grants like housing, bankruptcy and probably other secret dealings behind closed doors. Now that doesn't even include taxpayers bailouts. Shameless people.

Being a centrist is the political equivalent of being a moral relativist. Also, if you're against a tax on the rich, you're a Republican, plain and simple. A person in the middle would look at the tax rate on the rich and say "Yeeaaahh, there should be higher taxes there."

I somehow am always amazed at how many people lose their shit when they hear ‘raising Americans’ taxes’ and never bother to listen to the rest of it. The last tax ‘changes’ were mostly irrelevant for the 99% yet too many people got hooked on the GOP message that the bill was good because those people would get maybe a couple hundred more back per year. They were so hypnotized by that that they didn’t notice that the biggest beneficiaries of the tax cuts are the people who own boats that cost more than a normal person’s lifetime income.

Why are they equating democratic-socialist policies (which are thought-out, backed up by research and voters, and would change our society from a "money is everything" nation to a "everyone deserves to live" nation) with Trump's lunacy? Equating facts and researched opinions with lies and misdirection. Not everything said suggests this, but their tone seemed a little tone-deaf. I love Colbert, but I think political interviews are still a serious weakpoint for him. He doesn't shoot down falsehoods and just lets the guests speak without providing context. Sometimes, like here, he even joins into the conversation taking their side...I understand he is trying to be nice...but when someone equates AOC and Trump, you can't just agree with it as a legitimate political opinion. They do work closely with MSNBC...which will more than likely push positive stories about Harris, Booker, and Gilibrand without context. I hate the partisan way we talk about things as if it doesn't matter anymore who has the facts on their side. Everything is theater.

Notice how Stephen framed the interview by right from the start equating AOC and her policy proposals to Trump and his alleged sexual assaults and then by continually painting her as an uncouth, barbaric radical on the fringe of the mainstream who is "getting away with almost anything", when in fact, her policies are very mainstream, as poll after poll has shown. This attempt to low-key smear and defame AOC by unnaturally tying her to Trump while not surprising (since Colbert did the same to Bernie Sanders in 2016), blatantly ignores the 800 pound reality that is the Bernie Sanders led progressive movement that has awoken the youth and those who've been disenfranchised and disillusioned by the Wall Street captured Democratic party into activism and politics -- and made Bernie's Medicare For All proposal all but part of the Democratic party platform. But of course, among those on the pro-establishment side, including Stephen, it's blasphemy to acknowledge the existence of a progressive revolution taking place, let alone that it is the raison detre of AOC and others. Masterful job, Stephen. Loved the bit about dragging the wealthy from their towers and stripping them of their jewelry to pay for healthcare; and especially how you said it with a snarky, almost worrisome tone and expression. One couldn't have asked a Clinton corporate Democrat for more. Keep it up! P.S. See you in the White House! :) -- Kamala Harris

for those who came in late: as a result of ww2, and preceding 'great depression,' the 50's and 60's were america's golden age of widespread prosperity and world leadership in education and infrastructure. marginal federal tax rate was 90%, and some states added another 9%. taxing the rich causes prosperity, so does socialism in general. in modern times, the scandi nations are most prosperous, and socialist. socialism is only bad for rich people. but usa can not have socialism, chiefly because the man who wrote the constitution was rich and determined that the poor would not have access to his taxes. and he has been successful: by concentrating power in a few hundred people, he made it easy for the rich to own that power, simply by buying them. and it has worked as designed.

I really think the US needs to adopt the broadly used political spectrum. Left (pro civilian - social) Top (pro change - progression) Right (pro Business - Liberal) Bottom (Keeping this as is - Conservatism) This way it is more clear what people are. Liberal with progressive values. Social with conservative values. Or somewhere in between.

The only thing Trump can be credited w is being the straw that broke the camel's back - ppl like AOC are in power bc Democrats rose up, en masse, demanding diff candidates, sick of the old, spineless, tempered, corp friendly, centrists, who wldnt stand up to the GOP, and who LET voter suppression go unchecked. More diverse candidates fighting thru the decades of white male centrist Dem malaise & getting into the primaries bc the internet gave them direct access to The People that the centrist mealy-mouthers running the DNC cldnt stop (i don't mean the chair, who rotates and is a spokesperson, but the real nuts & bolts of the party machine). Better candidates gave rise to a flood of disenfranchised ppl rising up and demanding their voting rights. Ppl voted in record numbers bc a) there were candidates they felt they cld vote for FOR rather than just voting AGAINST Republicans b) Liberals were fed up with a small minority of our country backed by billionaires controlling our govt thru voter suppression, Machiavellian machinations, and uncompromising intransigence c) efforts on the ground from black voting rights groups, coupled w grass roots progressive political groups, fought GOP voter suppression and Dem malaise, and helped exciting candidates get into the primaries who were able to fund and promote their candidacies thru the internet w/o DNC interference, which led to d) the biggest midterm turnout since suffrage, which is the only way for The People to fight voter suppression and win. It's no accident that the new Dems first order of business is Voting Rights. Most of the country is in line w liberal policies and values, but the govt and media are slanted so far to the Right that "Centrist" is conservative; 70% of Americans wanna see billionaires taxed at higher rates. It's the so called "liberal" media and other rich ppl who balk at such things, coz they like they're wealth. The panic from these billionaires who're jumping into the race, bc they'd rather Trump won re-election, then see the Dems get elected on a wave of PEOPLE POWER, and ride into DC to restore Voting Rights, restore high tax rates, eliminate the billionaire class altogether bc really? who needs em? it's not like America wasn't a hotbed of innovation in the 50s when the richest ppl were getting taxed at 90%. Billionaires wld rather see Trump spread hate, & oppress LGBT ppl and POC, who they don't much like either. Both groups, bc of the oppression we face, are more demanding of a just economic & social playing field, and willing to take risks to attain it, bc we're already on shaky ground, so we'll entertain ideas like a 70% tax rate on billionaires even tho the wealthy conservative billionaires who run the so called "liberal" media are getting their scream machine out to talk abt such high tax cuts as being idealistic tish tosh. It's funny to me, living in Cali, how ppl assume Left Coast billionaires are all liberals. They may support the Dem party - excuse me, centrist Dems - bc The People have made Dems very powerful out here, but they also support Republicans outside the state. Left Coast billionaires are conservative, wealthy, ppl, who are often covert white supremacists, and terribly sexist. Look at Howard Shutlz - how many women and POC are on the Starbuck's Board? how many are CEOs? how many are in top admin positions getting top salaries? He may claim to come from the projects, but that doesn't mean he believes In equality. It's no accident that black men were ARRESTED for sitting in a Starbuck's. Shultz is flat out telling ppl he was never a Democrat, believe him.  Tech billionaires aren't neither. The tech world is notoriously sexist, queerphobic, & racist, Asians being the only welcome POC, and while it's bc they believe whites and Asians are "superior," the fact is, this country has been denying Ed & economic opportunities to it's black citizens since slavery. It used to be illegal for black ppl to get an Education, and today Education in majority black elementary schools is starved of funds. When Emancipation was declared, slaves were freed, but given NOTHING! It was cruel, stupid, and purposeful, bc it meant they'd suffer the slavery of abject poverty. An economic prison was created for black Americans, trapping them behind "red lines" when city zones were drawn up - not only did this force all black ppl to live in certain neighborhoods, it made it impossible for them to get loans, bc they lived in an area The Bank considered a high economic risk. In other words, ppl were so poor in that area, The Bank wldnt loan to anyone who lived there. Asian immigrants, coming from a society were Education is strong, many from communist countries, often received US govt assistance to settle in the US, esp during times of mass migrations. For instance, N Koreans got loans thru a govt program to open businesses in black neighborhoods, when black ppl cldnt get loans BECAUSE they lived there. It's like the cruelty of black face comedy - white ppl, making fun of black ppl for being uneducated, when it was white ppl who made it illegal to educate them.  I think it's no accident black ppl mostly get rich in entertainment and sports, bc in those two industries, ppl need agents, in other words, some white dude gets at least 10% of your earnings, right off the top. Entertainment, up until the internet, was totally controlled by ruthless, powerful, conservative, monied whites, who had iron fisted control of production, and cld hire and fire at will. Sports is practically slavery, where players have all white "owners," who can trade them to another city against their will, who make ALLLL the rules, rules to which players are allowed very little input. Owners can blackball players w no govt interference. Black ppl have traditionally been frozen out of business, bc culturally whites didn't wanna train a black person how to be good at Economics who wld ultimately control, not only her own money, but the money of a large corp. This is why black ppl say everything in America is about race, bc they're always bumping into institutional barriers to their advancement - an individual black person may not know exactly where that barrier originated, but she knows a wall when she runs into it - while whites don't see race, bc THEY'RE not bumping into any walls. What walls, i don't see any walls. It's like white ppl claiming there's no such thing as voter suppression of black ppl bc they voted without a prob.
